Mission Awareness
A vital part of our objectives is to build lasting relationships with people and organizations in Kenya. While relationships can be maintained from a distance, visiting Kenya, meeting and working alongside them is by far the best way to establish lasting relationships.
During our trip in January 2009 we were incredibly impacted by the people we met and the places we visited. To say that it was a life changing experience would be a gross understatement.
Kenya Help plans to be involved in a Mission Awareness Trip to Kenya every two years.

Marriage Enrichment
Kenya Help has been invited by a group of local churches to run Marriage Enrichment events in Kenya. Two members of Kenya Help are trained facilitators with CMEA (Couples for Marriage Enrichment Australia). Linda & Rob are travelling to Kenya to run the first of these events, a 3 day series of seminars and workshops in August 2010 (26th - 28th). As the planning for this first event has progressed, it has grown to now include a total of 50 couples - pastors from about 40 churches ( 5 couples from Uganda and 45 couples from Kenya). Many of the participating couples cannot afford the cost of attending these seminars which includes traveling costs, accommodation and food. Kenya Help hopes to help sponsor these events and we would value any donations towards this project. Note: Kenya Help members traveling to Kenya pay their own way. There will now also be a 2nd event the following week for a different group from the other side of Nairobi: an evening event for 7 couples. We are excited about this new project and it's potential for impacting and improving many lives in Kenya. Marriage Enrichment events are attended by couples who value their marriage and who want their relationship to be strong and enduring. They want to learn skills and have experiences that help them increase their marital intimacy and mutual understanding. They are committed to the present and future growth of their marriage. Small group process, including private and public couple dialogue, aids couples in learning that “we are not alone” in dealing with the typical issues in marriage. Learning new skills, sharing from experience, and affirming each other within a small group of caring couples provides powerful support for building positive bonds in marriage. |

Scholarships
Education in Kenya is based on a user pays system. Many young people cannot afford to study beyond high school, some cannot even afford to go to high school.
Kenya Help has committed to our first scholarship recipient. Ben completed high school in 2006 at SOS, Hermann Gmeiner Secondary School in Eldoret and although his marks were high enough, he could not afford to continue onto university. He has worked hard ever since saving hard with the hope of one day having enough to pay his entrance fee to study computer science. We met Ben during a Mission Awareness Trip in January 2009 and we were impressed by his work ethic and determination.
While we were still in Kenya, we committed to contribute towards his entrance fees and his first semester fees. We have further committed to contribute towards his fees and living costs for the next four years.
Ben has needed to change his studies from Kenyatta University to Maseno University IAT (Institute of Advanced Technology). Strikes at Kenyatta Uni in April 2009 forced the closure of the course Ben was doing. IAT is a more flexible option. Ben will at IAT in the second week of January 2010.
About $8,000 (AUD) over 3 years pays the educational fees for Ben, while about an extra $1,500 (AUD) per year would cover his accommodation and food.
As other oportunities arise, and funds become available, we would like to offer scholarships to other young Kenyans.

Elyon High School
Elyon High School is located in a slum area of Nairobi known as Dagoretti Corner. It was established to provide high school education for students from the local area that cannot normally afford to attend high school. Each student pays what they can afford with the balance being covered by sponsors of the Dagoretti Corner Self Help Group, an organization established by Pastor William from the Dagoretti Corner Baptist Church.
Elyon High School is eligible for permanent accreditation at the end of 2009, if they meet the government requirements. Pastor William has informed us that they will be able to meet the requirements in all areas except for one, Computer Studies.
Kenya Help has provided them with funding to purchase a small number of laptop computers. Laptops are the best choice since they can be easily locked away when not in use and they can still be used during the frequent power outages.
